Mole Removal

Mole removal is a procedure to remove moles for cosmetic reasons or because the mole is cancerous.

What is this procedure?

Mole removal is a procedure to remove moles for cosmetic reasons or because the mole may be potentially cancerous, in the form of melanoma. Moles can be removed via surgical methods, where they are cut out via a punch excision or shaved off using a scalpel. To determine the best mole removal method for you, factors such as your age and the location of mole must be considered to make the best decision possible.

When clumps of pigment cells (otherwise known as melanocytes) join together, they form moles. These skin growths can range in colour from red to light or dark brown, and they can be flat or raised from the skin, resembling dark spots.

The most common moles are benign, but any large, irregular, or changing moles should be checked by a qualified health practitioner.

During a skin inspection, the mole is measured, mapped, and photographed. Your clinician will use alcohol to disinfect the mole and surrounding skin before administering local anaesthetic to numb the region. The injection may sting a bit, but that should be the only discomfort you experience. You can also feel some pressure. Overall, it isn't harmful.

Depending on the size of the mole and the technique used to remove it, the treatment might take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour.

The method will be determined by the aim of the removal, the colour of the mole (brown, red or "nevi," or black), its size, whether it's elevated or flat, and its location.

What can be achieved?

  • Remove unwanted moles for cosmetic reasons
  • Increased self-esteem
  • Low-downtime with relatively fast results
